Victorian mudlarking was no fun - it was a filthy, wretched life - searching dirty stinking shores of London’s River Thames for coal, rags, bones, rope and nails - even plundering coal or iron from vessels they could reach to supplement their meagre living. To be a Mudlark in Victorian England was a question of survival and only the very poorest living at the margins of society found themselves trapped in this ‘job’ – perhaps one of the worst in Victorian era England. We take a journey back in time with the journalist Henry Mayhew as he tells his account of the life and struggles of these extreme scavengers.
