The Morrison government has suspended its military aid program with Myanmar in response to growing violence against anti-coup protestors.
More than 50 people have been killed since the unrest began last month when the military forcefully took over the democratically elected government.
In a statement, Foreign Minister Marise Payne said, "Australia has grave concerns about the military coup in Myanmar and the escalating violence and rising death toll following the events of February 1”.
“We condemn the use of lethal force or violence against civilians exercising their universal rights, including the right to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly,” she said.
Ms Payne has also called for the immediate release of Australian citizen Professor Sean Turnell who has been detained for more than 30 days and for deposed leader Aung San Suu Kyi to be released.
Australia will redirect the former military aid funding to humanitarian aid for vulnerable groups including the Rohingyas and other ethnic minorities.
Ms Payne is calling on the nation's regime to engage in dialogue saying Australia will continue to play a constructive role to support the people of Myanmar.
