If you've watched my channel for a while you've probably heard me discuss microphone specifications and how there is no standard in place for measuring microphone specifications. Not only does every company follow their own testing methods but they can change them at will and for whatever reason. This can lead to some pretty confusing comparisons between microphone specifications.
Sensitivity is one specification that can be very confusing. From the standard used being a fictional hypothetical microphone with unachievable specs to the formulas used to calculate sensitivity suddenly changing, it can lead you to confusion and steer you away from purchasing vintage microphones. In this video I'll shed some light on old school microphone sensitivity specifications and help you convert them into a more modern value that will make more sense.
In this video I show the specifications for an old school vintage model of the AKG D120 microphone and then demonstrate how easy it is to convert the sensitivity specification to a newer, easier to read spec. I then reveal a hidden specification missing from the Sennheiser MKH-50's specification sheet.
