Under a tight blockade and after one of the longest and most devastating military campaigns in the territory’s history, the choices are bleak: pay exorbitant prices for goods in the market, hand over up to 50% in commission just to withdraw cash, or risk your life at chaotic and deadly food distribution sites.

As US President Donald Trump’s ceasefire deal moves forward, hundreds of lorries carrying humanitarian aid are expected to begin entering Gaza. A famine was declared in parts of the territory back in August by UN-backed experts, who warned that more than half a million people were facing “catastrophic” conditions. Yet even with a ceasefire, Gazans remain trapped in a collapsed economy.
