Understanding the Risks Posed by Mining Legacy Hazards: Scott O'Neill, Mott MacDonald

Описание: Modern ground engineering and geological training misses out the rich history and impact of UK mining to the science of geology and its wider impact to society. Mining is often viewed as being a relic of the past and historically damaging to the environment. It is a subject largely ignored or unknown to many. Because of this the resultant tangible and non-tangible hazards created by this legacy are often late to be identified in project planning and when identified can often be costly to adjust for.

Furthermore, through this lack of discussion education and training, and as institutional knowledge of wide scale mining in the UK is slowly lost from the engineering community; there is a great variation in the level of understanding of the resultant hazards across the industry.

This lecture will look to understand the risk posed by mining legacy hazards through an understanding of the methods and means in which these mining operations were originally undertaken. This information can then be used to inform project decisions and provide support to project stakeholders.

This presentation will look at the way in which mining hazards (and in particular coal) can be assessed in relation to construction projects.

Scott O'Neill is a Technical Director within Mott MacDonald’s Heavy Civil Infrastructure team based in Birmingham and has over 25 years of experience of the assessment, investigation and remediation of mining hazards.
