This 52-kilometre narrow-gauge line, inaugurated in 1923, connects the Swiss canton of Ticino with the Italian region of Piedmont, winding through one of Europe’s most picturesque mountain corridors.

Departing from the underground station in Locarno, the journey quickly emerges into the lush scenery of the Centovalli, or “One Hundred Valleys,” named for its countless deep gorges, cascading streams, and densely forested slopes. Operated by Ferrovie Autolinee Regionali Ticinesi (FART) and SSIF (Società Subalpina Imprese Ferroviarie), the line is a marvel of early 20th-century engineering, electrified at 1,350 V DC and reaching gradients of up to 60‰.

The route features 83 bridges and 31 tunnels, guiding the train through quaint alpine villages, over stone viaducts, and past steep ravines. The cab view offers a front-row perspective of the rugged terrain and expertly maintained infrastructure, revealing the delicate balance between nature and rail technology.

Climbing to nearly 900 meters above sea level, the train crosses the Vigezzo Valley, known as the “Valley of the Painters” for its artistic heritage, before gradually descending toward the Italian border and the charming town of Domodossola.

This cab ride captures the heart of a route that links the Gotthard and Simplon corridors as a transportation lifeline and a cultural and scenic gem. It’s the second leg in a special Rail Relaxation series, showcasing one of the most enchanting railway journeys in the Alps.
