STORYLINE:
Around 150 Turks gathered in protest in the border province of Sirnak on Wednesday, attempting to act as human shields near to where the Turkish military has bombed Kurdish rebels on the other side of the border with Iraq.
Gathered near Cudi mountain which marks the border, the protesters called for an end to the raids on Kurdish areas and urged a peaceful solution.
AP Television footage showed women wearing banners and people dancing at dawn.
Emine Ayla, a legislator belonging to the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party, or DTP, climbed on a bus to speak to the crowd.
"We don't need another 30 years or another 30,000 deaths to understand that the policy of violence doesn't solve the Kurdish problem. Turkish society needs to understand the operations are not a solution," she said.
"We ask the Turkish Parliament to cancel the motion which allows the cross-border operations and in return we ask the PKK not to undertake any action," she added, referring to the Kurdistan Worker's Party.
The action was supported by demonstrations on Tuesday in Diyarbakir town, where protesters also called for the release of the Kurdistan Worker's Party founder and rebel leader Abdullah Ocalan.
On Monday, Turkish fighters bombed suspected Kurdish rebel hideouts in northern Iraq, a senior Kurdish official said. No casualties were reported.
Turkey has frequently targeted members of the PKK in cross-border raids into Iraqi territory where thousands of the rebels are based.
The PKK reportedly uses its strongholds in northern Iraq for cross-border strikes into Turkey.
Since December 16, the Turkish military has confirmed four cross-border aerial raids into Iraq.
Iraqi Kurdish officials, however, have reported other air strikes by Turkish jets, but those have never been confirmed by Turkey.
Turkey's military says the raids have inflicted heavy losses on the PKK, killing as many as 175 rebels and destroying command and logistic centres, shelters, and ammunition depots.
The rebel group is believed to have a large base in Khnera, where Turkish planes struck on Monday.
It was unclear whether the base was damaged.
The United States - which with Turkey and the European Union considers the PKK a 'terrorist' organisation - has cautioned Ankara against a large incursion into Kurdish areas of northern Iraq, fearing it could disrupt one of Iraq's more stable regions.
The PKK has been fighting for autonomy for the predominantly Kurdish population in southeast Turkey since 1984 when the rebels launched their first attack on a military barracks on August 15 of that year.
