Matthias Weckmann fu nominato organista titolare nella Jacobikirche di Amburgo nel 1655. Trentaquattro anni dopo (1689-1693) Arp Schnitger vi avrebbe costruito uno dei suoi capolavori, ma già alla fine del XVI secolo Michael Praetorius, nel suo Syntagma musicum, descrive l’organo della chiesa di S. Giacomo come uno fra i più grandi mai costruiti. Prima della nomina di Weckmann vi avevano posto mano, tra gli altri, organari del calibro di Hans Scherer e Gottfried Fritzsche. Weckmann, che in gioventù aveva studiato a Dresda, come corista alla Corte di Sassonia, sotto la direzione di Heinrich Schütz, era venuto in contatto con lo stile policorale italiano, in quanto Schütz aveva conosciuto Giovanni Gabrieli e Monteverdi durante il suo soggiorno italiano. In Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ (I), in particolare nel Secundus versus, magnifico esempio di fantasia su corale, compaiono fianco a fianco il severo contrappunto tedesco e la magnificenza dello stile italiano, grandioso e spettacolare, nelle strutture a cori alternati o in eco. L’organo della Germania del nord del sec. XVII viene così sfruttato in tutta la sua caleidoscopica ricchezza. Lo strumento virtuale utilizzato per questa registrazione, anche se costruito poco più di quarant’anni or sono (1973), presenta tuttavia una paletta fonica adattissima all’esecuzione della letteratura barocca nord tedesca, con la sua abbondanza di flauti e ance corte ideali per la consort music, nonchè di registri solistici splendidi come la Sesquialtera o il Cornet. Matthias Weckmann was appointed organist of the Jacobikirche Hamburg in 1655. Thirty-four years later (1689-1693) Arp Schnitger would build there one of his masterpieces, but at the end of the sixteenth century, Michael Praetorius, in his Syntagma Musicum, describes the organ of St. James as one of the largest ever built. Before the appointment of Weckmann, famous organ builders had worked at the organ, such as, among others, Hans Scherer and Gottfried Fritzsche. Weckmann, who in his youth had studied in Dresden, as a chorister at the Court of Saxony, under the direction of Heinrich Schütz, had come into contact with the Italian Polychoral style, because Schütz had met Giovanni Gabrieli and Claudio Monteverdi during his Italian stay. In Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ (I), particularly in Secundus versus, magnificent example of choral fantasy, appearing alongside the stern German counterpoint and the magnificence of Italian style, grand and spectacular, in alternating choirs structures or echo. The north german baroque organ is well exploited in all its kaleidoscopic resources. The virtual instrument used for this recording, although built about forty years ago (1973), however, has a stoplist perfectly suited to the execution of the North German baroque literature, with its abundance of flutes and reeds ideals for consort music, as well as splendid solo stops like Sesquialtera or Cornet. The images illustrate the Jakobikirche and its organ, in the present and in the past.
