The “Poincaré sphere” is a powerful geometric tool used to represent the polarization states of light or, in a different context, a famous topological 3-manifold known as the Poincaré homology sphere.
Purpose: It visualizes all possible states of polarization of light—linear, circular, and elliptical.
Structure: A unit sphere where:
The equator represents linear polarization.
The north/south poles represent right/left circular polarization.
Points in between represent elliptical polarization.
Axes:
S_1: Horizontal vs. vertical linear polarization.
S_2: Linear polarization at ±45°.
S_3: Right vs. left circular polarization.
Applications: Widely used in optics, quantum optics, and telecommunications to analyze and manipulate polarization states.
