Many governmental and non-governmental organisations have recently concentrated on lowering the adolescent pregnancy rate in various African nations, albeit progress has been extremely sluggish.

At any age, pregnancy and first parenthood produce changes that require adaptation. For adolescents, three transitions occur simultaneously. They must adjust to changes in their family-of-origin relationships during adolescence, changes in their physical and cognitive abilities, and changes in their social reality.

Adolescent parents often face stress from five different relationships: those with themselves, their partners, their parents, nonfamily institutions, and other family members. As a result, the adolescent parent must balance several competing developmental responsibilities, which raises the possibility of stress.
