History of war and ships:
Ebeltoft is a market town 03:53, estimated to have originated in the early Middle Ages around the natural harbour in Ebeltoft Creek. The town's early history is poorly illuminated, as no significant finds of buildings have been made, and the only archaeological evidence is a cultural layer dating to the 14th century. King Erik Menved granted the town market town privileges on 21 January 1301, and it is here that Ebeltoft is first mentioned. The residents were then given the right to hold market day one day a week and to pick up firewood in the royal forests.
In 1317, the market town received new rights that corresponded to those for Viborg and Aarhus, but it is only with the privileges from 1443 that the town is mentioned as a market town.
📖 War: The 17th century took a heavy toll on the town. There was plague 1619‑20
In 1627-29 war reached the city, indluding a firetaxation demanded by foregin troops. Which meant that the inhabitants had to pay a tax, to avoid their house being put on fire.
Wars again in the years 1643‑45 and 1657‑60, made it difficult to rebuild the city

In spite of difficult times in the 17th century, Ebeltoft had significant shipping, including timber from the royal forests on Djursland, and there was a lucrative voyage to Bergen in Norway.
When the city was at its highest, there were 30 ships.
In the 19th century Trade and shipping still played an important role for the city, and so did fishing. Cod, plaice and mackerel were sold in i.a. Copenhagen and Aalborg.
Industrial development got strong when Ebeltoft in 1901 was connected to the railway.
📖 Tourism: In 1885, a bathhouse complex was built to attract tourists. Although it had a short lifespan, the foundation stone for the city's later tourism was laid. The tourist association was formed in 1906, and in 1917 the first tourist office was opened in the town's bookstore.
A modern port was built in 1966 south of Ebeltoft and ensured a good connection to Zealand. The ship; 19:35 Fregatten Jylland was anchored in 1960 and became partly a tourist attraction, partly one of the city's landmarks. Molslinjen was of great importance for the city's tourism and partly development, as the increasing private motoring, among other things. required service stations. The population grew from 1,897 in 1930 to 2,485 in 1965.
