For the first time in 55 years, as I’m sure you’ve heard, Ford is expanding the Mustang family with the all electric Ford Mustang Mach-E.
Ford calls this Mach E “freedom, for a new generation”. A Mustang suited for the expanding needs of the customer. They say the name Mustang has always been tied to progress, performance and a bit of rebellion. In that sense, calling their first ever all electric SUV a Mustang, makes some sense.
When it arrives in late 2020, Ford Mustang Mach-E will be available with standard and extended-range battery options with either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive.
With the extended-range battery and rear-wheel drive, the Mach-E has an estimated range of at least 300 miles. In extended-range and all-wheel-drive, the Mach-E puts out 332 horsepower and 417 lb.-ft. of torque - with the standard all-wheel-drive variation main competitor in terms of acceleration being the base Porsche Macan.
There will also be two performance versions. The GT is targeting 0-60 mph in under 4 seconds, same thing here, with the Porsche Macan being the benchmark, the GT would beat the Macan Turbo.
The top of the line GT Performance Edition, will go from 0-60 mph in the mid-3-second range. Both of these GTs will have around 459 horsepower and 612 lb.-ft. of torque.
The Mach-E comes with 3 different drive modes - Whisper, Engage and Unbridled. The driver can customize each setting for a relaxed or more sporty driving experience. Some of the settings include vehicle responsiveness and steering controls, ambient lighting and dynamic cluster animations based on the driving behavior.
On the inside the Mach-E is equipped with next-generation SYNC's 15.5-inch screen that tries to get rid of complicated menus. It works pretty much like a smart phone where you navigate with touch, swipe and pinch controls.
This system adapts to the driver and learns over time what preferences to suggest and the software updates automatically over the air similar to how Tesla's remote software updates work. This could be improving the performance of the car, maintenance updates or simply adding new features to the software.
Just like your smartphone.
In addition to the 4.8 cubic feet, drainable frunk, the rear trunk offers 29 cubic feet of space. With the rear seats down, this increases to 59.6 cubic feet.
Bang & Olufsen speakers are integrated across the front, floating above the air vents like a sound bar. The interior design in general and especially the dash has a typical Mustang design with the double-cowl instrument panel.
Now one of the biggest drawbacks with EVs is the time it takes to charge it up to a decent range. This is of course something that will continue to improve and charging will only get quicker.
For the Mach-E, Ford offers a charging station for home use that can add an average range of 32 miles per charging hour on a 240V outlet, based on extended-range, rear-wheel-drive configuration.
There are also 12,500 charging stations (and more than 35,000 charge plugs) currently in the US and this number continues to grow, including DC fast chargers.
With a peak charging rate of 150 kW, the fast chargers can add an average of 47 miles of range in approximately 10 minutes for the extended range Mach-E, not too bad.
The standard-range Mustang Mach-E is estimated to charge from 10 percent to 80 percent in about 38 minutes while charging on a DC fast charging station.
If you look at the design objectively, without the Mustang name attached to it, what are YOUR thoughts of it? Let me know in the comments below.
In the end, it’s all about adapting. Adapting to a new reality where old ideas and concepts don’t fit in. The Ford Mustang Mach-E is Ford’s introduction to the era of electric vehicles for the masses. It needs to grab people's attention and make us curious. It wouldn’t have the same effect if they named it the Ford Mach-E. There’s a key component missing in that name. There’s no legacy to the name. I think that’s the reason it became a Mustang. To pull people into this new and unfamiliar technology.
