Pitting corrosion test is performed to verify the corrosion resistance of our welded profiles in highly corrosive environments, which is particularly important for certain stainless steel grades such as: duplex (e.g. 1.4462/2205), superduplex (e.g. 1.4410/2507) or superaustentic (e.g. 1.4539/904L).
At Montanstahl AG depending on material, product application and specific customer needs we perform pitting corrosion tests according to ASTM G4811, ASTM A923, TWI and Norsock Standard M630.
It is performed as follows:
Preparing the test sample by, cutting a 3 to 5 cm long piece of bar without overheating it, then polishing, washing and drying.
Weighing of the sample
Immersion in the corrosive solution at a temperature and for a period of time that may vary depending on stainless steel grades and applied testing standard
Washing and drying of the sample
Re-weighing and visual analysis with a 10x lens
The test is succesful if no pits are visible and the weight of the sample is still the same.
