Rev. Jesse Jackson is a prominent American civil rights leader, Baptist minister, and political activist whose influence has spanned more than five decades. Jackson made history with his presidential campaigns in 1984 and 1988. Running for the Democratic nomination, he became one of the first African Americans to mount a serious national campaign for the presidency. In 1988, he won 11 primaries and caucuses and finished second in the race, expanding minority voter registration and reshaping the Democratic Party’s platform. His rallying cry, “Keep Hope Alive,” became one of the most recognized phrases in modern American political history.
