How to Become a Certified Event Planner

You can earn the following certifications:

1. Certified Meeting Professional (CMP)
To become a CMP, you will need 3-5 years of event management experience and formal event education hours. With this certification, you will learn industry best practices and understand commonly used language amongst planners. You must apply to take the exam. The exam consists of 165 multiple choice questions.

2. Certified Special Events Professional (CSEP)
The CSEP is offered through the organization, International Live Events Association (ILEA). You must have 3 years of event planning experience. You are required to apply to take the exam. The exam consists of multiple-choice questions and fill in the blank short answers. It includes questions about volunteer management, risk management, audio visual, and event design.

3. Certified Event Planner (CEP)
The CEP does not require experience. It includes two days of comprehensive event planning training. At the end of the training, you must complete an assessment to determine your certification eligibility. Every two calendar years for a total of four years, you must complete an online renewal training. Upon completion of the two renewals, you will become a CEP Alumni, which signifies four years of consistent event planning and training. The CEP equips students with the education hours needed to apply for the CSEP or CMP certifications.

Another route for becoming a Certified Event Planner includes earning an undergraduate education at a college in business management, hospitality management, communications, or marketing. Next, take training courses offered through event planning associations. Finally, plan events until you acquire 3 years of experience and apply to take an event certification exam.
