GLAUBER, CLARO is a return almost half a century later in the Rome of the greatest exponent of Brazilian cinema Glauber Rocha, in his Italian exile composing a patchwork through the memory of his friends, collaborators, and doing a contemporary revisit of the Roman locations of his penultimate feature CLARO.

Glauber in his years of exile, between 1971 and 1976, frequented Italy for short and longer periods, where he met solidary friends, completed films such as “Cancer” and “História do Brasil”, wrote and developed several projects such as “Der Leone have Sept cabeças”, “La caduta degli Dei”, “Anabays” and and many others. In 1975, in Rome, he shot his penultimate feature film, CLARO (35mm, 110’, Italy) with Juliet Berto, Carmelo Bene, El Cachorro, Bettina Best, Tony Scott and Mackay Taylor and produced by Marco Tamburella. Rocha declares: “I want to see clear the contradictions of the mythological cradle of Western civilization. I want to make a Brazilian vision of Rome, or rather a testimony by the colonized on the land of colonization.”

GLAUBER, CLARO investigates the experience of Rocha and a whole generation of creatives in Italy in the 70s, approaching themes in several extracts that overlap: the backstage of Claro and its historical relevance, underground cinema, neorealism, cinema novo, the 70s, political militancy, utopia, post-colonialism, the revolution, tracing an inevitable parallel between Italy in the twentieth century and the world today, between the utopia of the seventies and the current dystopia. Among revisits and unpublished archive images, the still alive reverberations of the human being Glauber Rocha stand out in the life and memory of all the interviewees, collaborators, fraternal friends, actors, producers, technicians, film critics, art historians, loves. An incredibly present memory and feeling, even with the inexorable passage of time and the transmutation of bodies. Throughout his career Glauber Rocha supported an increasingly radical, experimental, unusual idea of making cinema while the world took a completely opposite turn. However, he realized this bitterly too late, at the presentation of "The Age of the Earth" at the 1980 Venice Film Festival. One year before his premature death at the age of 42.

Glauber Rocha leaves us a strong legacy, praised by international cinematography, despite being increasingly forgotten in the Brazilian panorama, where the lack of historical memory is a recurring practice. Dreamer, misfit, sweet, crazy, generous, rebellious, visionary and troublemaker – a man who had a different perspective of things, that saw beyond his present time and space, who did not bow to the rules and did not respect the status quo. What is left of the lesson of one of the most important Latin American directors of our century? From your controversial, imaginative, visionary cinema? A street, a school, a cinema, an airport where unscrupulous politicians hold populist rallies without even mentioning their name, or knowing their importance in world culture?

GLAUBER, CLARO, makes it clear that in addition to being the filmmaker who most thought of Brazil, it revolutionized cinema, did not bow to the rules and did not respect the status quo, polemicized with Europe, he had a different perspective on things, which he saw way beyond his time and that he was mostly right. Glorified by some, hated by others, but almost always misunderstood Glauber made an essential contribution to the art of world cinema and cannot be ignored. His cinematography deserves to be remembered and important episodes must not be forgotten. Glauber Rocha, on an international scale, paid tribute to Latin American filmmakers like few others. He helped cinema move forward. Because only the people who are passionate and crazy enough to believe they can change the world, are the ones who can really do it.
