Gerald Finzi (1901-1956) Oh Fair to see Op. 13b
Bearing witness to and communing with nature is a revisited theme in this cycle. Finzi was very skilled at setting pastoral scenes, whether depicting reflection on a flowering cherry tree, or pondering love whilst laying atop a hill. Songs like “Oh Fair to See,” “As I Lay in the Early Sun,” and “Harvest”, though unique individually, are a representation of this specific skill. Early in his career, he left the hustle and noise of London for the quiet of the English Countryside. The influence of that tranquil time of his life is especially felt in these pastoral settings.
