Colin Dawson was the lead vocalist for The Detours, the teenage covers band who, during the early sixties, played regularly throughout west London (and sometimes further afield) before changing their name to The Who. Colin first met Roger Daltrey in a café in Acton in 1961, and the two of them formed The Detours soon afterwards (Colin on lead vocals, Roger on guitar). Before too long, John Entwistle had joined the band, and various other members came and went until Pete Townshend and drummer Doug Sandom were also established in the five-piece line-up.

Colin eventually left The Detours due to the difficulty in balancing a full-time job, playing four or five gigs a week, and his relationship with his fiancé. After a spell with Gabby Connolly of fellow local band The Bel-Airs as lead singer, Roger eventually took up the mantle, with Pete becoming The Detours’ sole guitarist. By early 1964, after discovering a band called ‘Johnny Devlin and the Detours’ playing on TV show Thank Your Lucky Stars, the west London quartet changed their name to The Who…
