Electromagnetic radiation is a type of energy that is transmitted through space at a very high speed. There are different types of the EMR like light and heat etc., The nature of the EMR is explained by the following two theories.
Particle theory
According to this theory, EMRs are considered as a stream of particles or packets of energy called quanta. The Quantum of light is called photons. The energy of these photons is proportional to their frequency of propagation.
Wave theory
According to this theory, the EMR may be considered as composed of two fields Electrical and (ii) Magnetic fields.
These propagate in the form of waves and are at a right angle to each other as well to the line of propagation as shown in fig. It is the electrical component of the EMR that interact with electrons in the matter, most of the properties of EMR can be explained based on wave theory
