In a historic encounter, Liverpool won the 1977 European Super Cup by defeating Hamburg SV 7–1 on aggregate. After a 1–1 draw in Germany, Liverpool thrashed Hamburg 6–0 at Anfield on December 6, 1977, with a hat-trick from Terry McDermott.
The game marked the return of Liverpool icon Kevin Keegan to Anfield as a Hamburg player.
This would be the first time Liverpool had won the European Super Cup.
