The original 'Blue Pullman' first began service in 1960, worked by a small fleet of diesel-electric locomotives and operated, primarily, within two regions. The Midland Pullman operated between St Pancras and Manchester Central via the Midland Main Line and the Western Pullman that operated from Paddington to Bristol, Cardiff and Swansea in the south-west and Birmingham and Wolverhampton via Leamington Spa in the north-west. However, they didn't last long, being deemed too expensive to maintain such a small fleet of trains and they were withdrawn by May 1973. None were preserved.
Since then, there have been two attempts to reimagine the Blue Pullman. The first by FM Rail in 2006, featuring two class 47s and Mk2 coaches but the operator ceased trading the following year. The second is the one featured here, by Locomotive Services Ltd. (LSL), involving an ex-East Midlands Railways class 43 power cars, 43046 and 43055, and a rake of nine Mk3 coaches. It began its inaugural run between London St Pancras and Crewe on 12 December 2020, over sixty years after the original Pullman entered service.
