On Wednesday 6th March, the annual Whitefriars House Athletics Carnival took place at Tom Kelly Athletics Track, and it promised to be one of the best yet. The day began with the College gathering as a community to celebrate Ash Wednesday with a liturgy.
At the conclusion of the ceremony, everyone retreated to their house areas and watched closely as the first events (1500 metres and Hurdles) began, hoping for a prized blue ribbon to make its way back to their house. As the day progressed, it became clear that it was going to be a tight contest, with many houses in contention to win the overall trophy.
As a tradition, the Tom Kelly Fastest Friar was held in the middle of the day, a 100-metre sprint between the fastest twelve individuals across all year levels. With a competitive field from Year 8’s to 12’s, the stage was set. It was over in a heartbeat, with Year 11 Andrea Sticca narrowly defeating Pat Daly in a time of 11.39s, and Flynn Maguire crossing the finish line in third place.
The last lot of events, the 4x100 metre relays, required a united team effort and the last opportunity to bring valuable points to your house, and they were watched with high anticipation.
After all the events had been run, everyone waited for the points to be tallied and presentations to begin. Brandsma were the favourites and previous leaders before the final count, and continued their strong form to take out the overall trophy, with Lisieux finishing 2nd and Soreth in 3rd place.
Overall, it was a very enjoyable day, with an event or activity for everyone, and it was great to see so much determination and spirit on display.
