Professor Jodhka’s talk examined how The Remembered Village shapes a commonsense view of Indian society and village life. Supported by the Royal Anthropological Institute, the lecture revisited the legacy of M. N. Srinivas, whose village studies in the 1950s marked a shift from the orientalist ‘book-view’ to a ‘field-view’ of lived sociality.
Focusing on Rampura, the lecture showed how the village came to stand as ‘India in microcosm’, shaping enduring categories such as dominant caste, sanskritization, and vote-bank, now embedded in popular and academic understandings of Indian society. While foundational, this ‘textbook-view’ also carries ideological assumptions, including methodological nationalism and an exclusionary framing of social life.
Drawing on fieldwork from north and northwest India, Professor Jodhka highlighted the limits of the ‘book–field’ binary and called for a more historically grounded sociology attentive to the changing realities of the field.
