A flag raising ceremony officiated by Chief Executive Tung Chee-hwa opened celebrations here Wednesday marking the first anniversary of the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty. Tung, accompanied by his wife Betty, stood alongside mainland and local government officials as police officers raised the Chinese and the Special Administrative Region (SAR) flags at the waterfront Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition centre.

SOT Tung Chee hwa (Cantonese): "Today with much excitement and pleasure in our hearts, we celebrate the successful implementation of the One Country Two System Policy in the past year. The central government in the mainland has not intervenued in any domestic affairs of Hong Kong. On the opposite, the central government has repeatedly claimed that it will pay any price to maintain Hong Kong's prosperity and security."

Tung sot: "The Asian financial storm (cutaway to audience) hit hard on Hong Kong. Incidents that Hong Kong has never had has come to us one after the other. The strength of impact of the Asian financial storm is beyond one's imagination."

Jiang sot : " Time will prove that the One Country Two Systems policy will not only safeguard the interests of all strata of Hong Kong people, but also maintain the status of the so-called Special Administrative Region as an international finance, trading and shipping centre. We have every reason to believe that if we consistently keep this policy, with the support from the mainland, Hong Kng must be able to build a very bright future. And we have every reason to believe that the success of the One Country Two System policy in Hong Kong will become the demonstrating model for Macau's return to the motherland and solving the Taiwan question.";
