Some laptops from the IBM ThinkPad T20 / T21 / T22 / T23 series have a specific issue when a defective battery (one that no longer holds a charge) is installed and Windows 98 is used.
In this situation the laptop may sometimes boot to a black screen or show an error related to the video driver or video adapter.
The solution is simple: remove the battery from the laptop and start it using only the power adapter. After removing the defective battery the system usually boots normally. Alternatively you can replace the battery with one that still holds a charge.
Most of the time, after this error occurs and after you remove the battery, you need to boot the system in normal mode and set the desired screen resolution.
You can first set the display to *800×600 with 256 colors*, then restart the laptop, and after that set the maximum resolution supported by this laptop — *1024×768*.
Interestingly, this problem does not occur under Windows XP, even if a defective battery is installed.
