Curt in Curt's Corner goes over a common question regarding Torque Converters, What is Torque Converter Stall Speed?
When the engine is idling, and you put it into gear the RPMs will go down but the engine will not stall out like on a standard
transmission if you were to release the clutch all the way without accelerating.
On an automatic to prevent that from happening, all the energy is spooled into the converter. The engine will reduce rpm about two to three hundred rpm so your idle will jump down but it will not stall out. What is happening is all that energy or the stall speed of the converter has now kicked. It's spooling that energy
Stall speed basically spools the energy of your motor to the torque converter before it releases it to the transmission.
