The Asagiri-class destroyers were the second generation of multirole destroyers for the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF). The lead ship, JDS Asagiri, was commissioned on March 17, 1988. After a stint as a training vessel in 2005, it returned to active escort duty in 2012. It saw action in the Arabian Sea and off the coast of Somalia in 2019 before conducting joint exercises with Oman and the Philippines. Following a long and distinguished service, the Asagiri is scheduled to be decommissioned in early 2026.
