In China, BYD has drawn major attention after introducing an SUV featuring a built-in, roof-mounted drone that allows drivers to monitor traffic conditions ahead without leaving the vehicle.
Created in partnership with DJI, the Lingyuan system enables the drone to deploy at the push of a button, transmit real-time video directly to the car’s display, track the vehicle at speeds of up to 54 km/h, and automatically dock back to recharge.
With a price of roughly $2,200 and availability limited to China for now, this innovation has the potential to transform navigation, off-road exploration, and emergency operations while also raising important questions around safety standards and drone regulations.
