This exciting talk by one of the world’s leading earthquake geologists and science communicators will explore new cutting edge research into the science of earthquakes and their effects.
Scientists estimate that more than 2 million people will die in earthquakes in the 21st century. The physics of earthquakes are well understood and scientific advances have enabled the monitoring and documentation of seismic processes in unprecedented resolution. However, clearly this has not translated into lower global seismic risk. Australia is not immune from earthquakes. A surge of earthquakes continues to occur in a seismic belt stretching through the centre of the continent, including a magnitude 6.1 earthquake near Uluru in May 2016 that was similar to the fatal 2011 earthquake in Christchurch.
Dr. Quigley will provide informative commentary on topics including Australasian earthquakes and earthquake prediction.
