An ancient trail runs through the rugged lava flows of western New Mexico, connecting the pueblos of Zuni and Acoma. This hostile landscape has been traversed by many different people through the years, named “El Malpais” by Spanish explorers. Despite the harsh environment, ancient and historic ruins dot the valleys and mesa tops above, evidence of past human inhabitance in the region.
