USA: UNABOMBER SUSPECT MAY HAVE ATTEMPTED SUICIDE IN JAIL

Officials in Sacramento, California, may have further proof that Unabomber suspect Ted Kaczynski attempted suicide on Thursday.

Authorities say the underwear Kaczynski apparently used in the attempt has been found in a stretched condition in his jail cell rubbish.

He's now under a suicide watch.

Officials say it appears he had tried several hours earlier to hang himself in his cell.

"We received information from the US Marshall's office about five hours ago that some time during the late night or early morning hours, Mr Kaczynski may have attempted suicide in his cell. The information that we received from the US Marshall was that when he arrived at the courthouse this morning he had a red mark on the right side of his neck and had no underwear."

What did the Unabomber suspect use?

His underwear.

"When questioned, he said he lost his underwear in the shower. We are assuming, (I'd) like to emphasise assuming that some time during the night hours he attempted to hang himself with his own underwear."

They say the underclothes were later found in a stretched condition in a smaller plastic bag in Kaczynski's rubbish.

Earlier the garments couldn't be found.

The suspect now has been moved into a psychiatric cell in the Sacramento County Jail.
He's being kept under 24-hour watch to prevent any future attempts.

"We searched his cell, we could not find his underwear, we are also assuming that he forced the underwear down the toilet. Because of what has occurred and because of the state of mind that we believe he is in at this point we are going to put him in a 24-hour monitored psych cell in the main jail, on the second floor where he will be continually monitored by a nurse and also have a heart monitor on him at all times."

On Friday, Kaczynski is expected to appear in the courtroom for another hearing.

Defence lawyers and prosecutors will discuss plans to give the suspect a mental evaluation.
