In the black waters of the Saigon River, a young gunner’s mate faced an impossible choice — obey orders, or save his brothers.
On the night of August 2, 1969, Petty Officer David Larsen, just 21 years old, manned a Patrol Boat, River (PBR-775) as part of the U.S. Navy’s Operation Game Warden. When an ambush team of Army Rangers was surrounded by over 50 Viet Cong soldiers, Larsen broke from orders, leapt ashore under fire, and fought alone to hold off the enemy.
With only an M-60 machine gun, Larsen’s one-man stand bought the time needed to rescue the trapped soldiers and evacuate the wounded. His actions would earn him the Navy Cross, America’s second-highest award for valor — and make him a legend of the Mekong Delta.
This is the story of courage born in chaos, of the sailor who refused to stand by while others died.
A hero not remembered by medals — but by the men he saved.
