The back and tail plumage are green and appear black from a distance. The underparts are white with chestnut undertail coverts. The legs are dark pink, the beak is black. Both sexes have a broad pale eyebrow. In the young, the flight feathers are edged black.

Can also consume seeds of pine trees and also seeds of various herbaceous plants. Its nest is a simple cavity on the ground, often slightly raised so that the brooding bird has a good view of the surroundings.
The male scratches several cavities among which the female chooses one.
The female lays 4 eggs (pale buff, dark streaked and mottled) per clutch. Incubation lasts about 4 weeks. It is provided by the male and the female. The first eggs are laid between mid-March and April. There may be a replacement brood in May-June. The chicks are precocial. They are raised by both parents. They have their final plumage after 35-40 days.
Sometimes in pines or other conifers of altitude offering in the surroundings a rather clear ground, the crested lapwing is present on the whole of the northern hemisphere.
In France, it nests in the northern three-quarters of the country and winters over almost the entire territory.
