For those pushing past Kandy in Sri Lanka’s beautiful Central Highlands, few places are more notable than the once-sleepy outpost of Ella.

Due in large part to the spectacularly scenic section of railroad between Kandy and Ella, the latter has grown up fast in recent years, becoming a popular backpacker town.

Ella is surrounded by waterfalls and gorgeous mountain landscapes offering plenty of hiking and other nature activities. Along the famous rail line a few kilometers from town the World War I-era Nine Arch Bridge is a tribute to British engineering during the colonial era.

I’m staying at Green Valley, a guesthouse tucked away on a hillside beneath a Buddhist temple with an unforgettable view of Ella Gap that opens to lowland forests in the distance.
