If you are a four wheel drive enthusiast or an overland traveler, you have probably heard of the Mojave Road. It is a popular historical overland track that was originally a native American trade route, then a wagon road, and a military route across the Mojave Desert in the 1800s. Rediscovered and developed as a four wheel drive recreation trail by Dennis Casebier and a host of volunteers in the 1980s, It has become a premier overland route through the desert in California. But at 133 miles, it pales in comparison to the East Mojave Heritage Trail. The EMHT is now about 733 miles, up from 660 miles when it was first published. Recognizing that concentrating traffic on one route through the desert would increase the impact, he and his volunteer group, the Friends of the Mojave Road, set about creating a loop around the East Mojave Desert, visiting all sorts of historical points of interest, including ranches, mines, and railroads, and others. The EMHT was developed over many years, and the 4 guidebooks were published between 1987 and 1990. Shortly thereafter, President Clinton signed the Desert Protection Act, which created many wilderness areas that cut the trail up, and made the guidebooks unusable. In 2019, Billy Creech, at the request of Dennis Casebier, and working with the Bureau of Land Management and the National Park Service, created alternate routes around the wilderness areas, and once again made the route compliant and usable. Since then, it has been slowly gaining popularity.
Special thanks to the Mojave Desert Heritage and Cultural Assn. for their help with this project.
