Gallery Tour Guide Jennifer Little presents Jaques de Gheyn II's Master and Pupil in British Sign Language.
It is clear this is a painting of a teacher and his pupil. But what is being taught here? From their body language and gestures, perhaps it could be Sign Language?
The plague on the wall reads 'EPANNONEAPELLI / EDEINEEYNNIAEYEIA' (sic). We now know this is not a fully correct translation. This would have originally read in Greek: 'BPABEION ARETH / ETIN EY AI EYEIN', which translates as 'the prize of virtue is having good education'.
Master and Pupil is on display in gallery 14 at Manchester Art Gallery.
