My recording of Odysseus using his wiles to thwart the man-eating Cyclops, outwitting him and destroying his sight, but his decision to taunt the evil giant afterward ultimately cost him ten long years and a lot of lives. The lesson? Being a sore winner sucks. Be gracious in victory. Translated by Robert Fagles. Phaecia is a mythical island in Greek mythology that serves as the final stop for Odysseus before his return to Ithaca. Its King and Queen are beloved by the Gods and they agree to help Odysseus return home. It is here where Odysseus recounts his long arduous 10 year journey after the sacking of Troy. Today he tells of his visit to the Lotus Eaters and his Pyrrhian triumph over the Cyclops.
The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem attributed to Homer that recounts the ten-year journey of the hero Odysseus back to his home in Ithaca after the Trojan War. The narrative opens in medias res; the preceding events are described through flashbacks and storytelling. Composed orally around the 8th or 7th century BC and later written down, "The Odyssey" is a sequel to "The Iliad," which details the events of the Trojan War. It is divided into 24 books and explores themes of hospitality (xenia), mutability, loyalty, and vengeance. It is one of the cornerstones of the Western literary canon and inspiration to artists for over 2800 years.
