A sudden and violent shift in winter weather turned a stretch of Interstate 79 into a scene of chaos and tragedy on Friday afternoon, February 6, 2026. A massive pileup involving approximately 25 vehicles in Butler County resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries, paralyzing travel on one of Western Pennsylvania’s most critical transit arteries for hours. The collision occurred shortly before noon in the northbound lanes of I-79, specifically near mile marker 84, situated between the Evans City (Exit 83) and Zelienople (Exit 88) interchanges. According to the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP), the region experienced a "flash freeze" effect. What began as light freezing drizzle rapidly transitioned into heavy, blinding snow squalls. In a matter of minutes, the pavement transformed into what witnesses described as a "solid sheet of ice," leaving drivers with zero traction and almost no visibility. The pileup reportedly began when several vehicles lost control and struck median barriers or each other, creating a chain reaction that snared passenger cars and heavy commercial tractor-trailers alike. While 25 vehicles were directly involved in the crash, an additional 20 vehicles were found stranded or disabled along the berms, unable to navigate the treacherous incline near the crash site. Authorities have tragically confirmed the death of Evan Gingo, an 18-year-old from Pittsburgh. Investigators state that Gingo was a passenger in one of the vehicles caught in the initial chain of collisions. Despite the rapid response of emergency personnel, he was pronounced dead at the scene. Fire departments from Cranberry Township, Evans City, and Zelienople, along with multiple EMS units and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), worked through freezing temperatures to extricate victims and clear the debris. Meanwhile, Snow, ice and slush are still blocking parking spaces and making some street corners and transit stops treacherous in Philadelphia, nearly two weeks after a winter storm dumped more snow than the city had seen in a decade. Without precautions, the wind chill could lead to hypothermia or frostbite, according to the weather service. Wind gusts could also lead to “widespread power outages,” in Delaware and parts of South Jersey, forecasters said. A car crash shut down both directions of U.S. 35 in both directions at 16 Mile Road Friday afternoon, according Mason County Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Mason County Emergency Management officials say multiple vehicles were involved in the crash, which happened around 12:30 p.m. Friday. Mason County Emergency Management says that there are injuries involved in the accident, but no further details are available at this time. Mason County Sheriff’s Office and the West Virginia State Police are responding on scene. Multiple car crashes are being reported as snow continues to accumulate. In Mercer County, an accident at Locust Street and another near Oakvale Road are being reported, as well as one on Courthouse Road. There are several crashes in Beckley, as well. Snow started falling heavily just before 1 p.m. and slick roads are reported everywhere. An Arctic front is set to hit Northern Virginia this weekend, bringing brutally cold temperatures, high winds, and snow to the D.C. region. The direct blast of frigid air will surge south Friday into Saturday, affecting more than 100 million people across multiple states, including Virginia. The harshest conditions are expected during the first half of the weekend, with snow and the strongest winds accompanying the system, according to forecasters. Snow showers will be hit-or-miss into the evening hours as the Arctic front approaches. Up to a half-inch of snow is possible for the Baltimore region, forecasters said.
