Part III: From the Declaration of Independence to the Civil War
Part III of our series explores the roles of African enslavement and the American Jewish experience from the Revolutionary era through the Civil War, emphasizing the shared history of the African and Sephardic diasporas in early America. It will highlight the intersections of these communities' stories, particularly about community life and the struggle for freedom and identity.
We will examine key figures such as Moses Michael Hays of Newport, David Levy Yulee of Florida, and Judah P. Benjamin of Louisiana—two of whom were among the first Jews elected to the U.S. Congress. Their stories are part of the broader narrative of how Jewish life in early America was influenced by issues of slavery and race.
This program, which takes place during the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution and the 160th anniversary of the end of the Civil War, invites participants to reflect on how the legacies of slavery, diaspora, and faith continue to shape our country today. Join us for an engaging conversation at the intersection of history, race, and identity.
