According to legend, after spending three months Abhidhamma to Buddha 's mother reborn as Matrudiviya Raja in Tavutisa heaven. Buddha descended to earth at Sankassa via a Golden Ladder accompanied by numerous Devas. Kings, ministers, and thousands of people assembled there upon hearing the news. King Ashoka developed the city after Buddha's Mahaparinirvana, installing his famous Pillar of Ashoka and building a stupa and temple commemorating Buddha's visit. The ruins of old monasteries and Buddhist monuments can still be found. Alexander Cunningham discovered the site in 1842, followed by Anagarika Dharmapala in 1929 and Panditha Madabawita Wijesoma Thero in 1957, who started a Buddhist school there. Sankassa Dewarohan Viharaya is a popular temple offering clean and comfortable accommodation for pilgrims.

දේශනාකර මාස තුනක් ගතකර බොහෝ දේවතාවන් පිරිවරා රන් ඉණිමඟක් මාර්ගයෙන් සංකස්සේදී පොළොවට පහළ වූ සේක. ඒ පුවත ඇසූ රජවරු ද ඇමැතිවරු ද දහස් ගණන් ජනයා ද එහි රැස්ව සිටියහ. අශෝක රජු බුදුන් වහන්සේගේ මහා පරිනිර්වාණයෙන් පසු නගරය සංවර්ධනය කර, ඔහුගේ සුප්‍රසිද්ධ අශෝක ස්ථම්භය ස්ථාපනය කර, බුදුන් වහන්සේගේ පැමිණීම සිහිපත් කරමින් ස්ථූපයක් සහ විහාරයක් ඉදිකරන ලදී. පැරණි ආරාම සහ බෞද්ධ ස්මාරකවල නටබුන් තවමත් දක්නට ලැබේ. ඇලෙක්සැන්ඩර් කනිංහැම් විසින් 1842 දී මෙම ස්ථානය සොයා ගත් අතර, 1929 දී අනගාරික ධර්මපාලතුමා සහ 1957 දී පණ්ඩිත මඩබාවිට විජේසෝම හිමි විසින් එහි බෞද්ධ පාසලක් ආරම්භ කරන ලදී. සංකස්ස දේවරෝහණ විහාරය වන්දනාකරුවන් සඳහා පිරිසිදු සහ සුවපහසු නවාතැන් සපයන ජනප්‍රිය විහාරස්ථානය
