The amazing new finding colonial protozoa
This colonial protozoa ( Epistylis ) was found quite common in pond water in bengal . Many snails (like Vivipara bengalensis) sometime carry them as encrustation like algae ( but white in colour). This belongs to the same group as the common protozoa Paramoecium which has cilia and belong to the group Ciliata.
On investigation, it seems this is a colonial ciliates - Epistylis anastatice [ acording to G.T.Tonapi : Fresh water animals of India, 1980 ].
This is a branched colony where the strand ( axoneme) is non-contractile [ compare to Zooxanthium where the whole colony is contractile ].
We can clearly see cilia on top of the head ( similar to Vorticella, although that is solitory )
I am sure if you observe pond water through microscope , you will find many more interesting organisms !
Happy watching.
