At just 22 years old, Laila Edwards is rewriting history.
As Team USA Women’s Hockey prepares to take the ice at the Olympics, Edwards will become the first Black woman ever to compete for the U.S. Women’s Olympic Hockey Team — breaking a nearly three-decade barrier in the sport.
From learning figure skating as a young girl in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, to winning national championships at Wisconsin and now representing her country on the world’s biggest stage, Edwards’ journey is one of perseverance, resilience, and purpose. Along the way, she’s faced microaggressions, pushed through adversity in a predominantly white sport, and embraced her role as a trailblazer for the next generation of hockey players of color.
Now, wearing “USA” across her chest, Edwards is on the cusp of Olympic glory — and inspiring countless young athletes who finally see someone who looks like them on the ice.
