Welcome to Episode 16 of Reading, Minnesota!

In today’s episode, we’re continuing our Year 1 Fall harvest as we work on bringing in over 400 acres of corn here on the farm! Over the past couple episodes we’ve made a great start on our very first Fall harvest season here in Reading, Minnesota, and things are finally beginning to come together after an entire year of planting, preparing fields, and building up our operation.

We kicked off the harvest season by firing up our two Case IH 9240 combines and attaching our 16-row corn headers before heading out to our very first field of the season — the 200 acre corn field that surrounds our farmyard.

After opening up the field with our combines, we brought in our two J&M X112 auger wagons, which are being pulled by the Challenger MT867 and the John Deere 8345R. Stationed along the edge of the field we’ve got our semi trucks, each pulling large grain trailers. The auger wagons unload into the trucks, and the trucks then haul all of the corn back to the farmyard where every last kernel gets stored in our grain silos.

Right now our two Case 9240 combines are working on the final passes of corn that remain standing in this field. Once those last rows are finished, we’ll be packing up our entire harvesting fleet and sending everything across the map to the North East side, where Field 31 is waiting for us — another massive 200 acre corn field that will be the final harvest of Year 1.

To kick things off today, I’ll be jumping back into our Challenger MT867 so we can continue carting corn from the combines. There are only a few passes left in this field, and after unloading the combines one more time they should have enough capacity in their grain tanks to finish off the remaining rows.

During the last episode we also fired up a couple additional operations to run alongside the harvest. With so much equipment sitting idle in our sheds while we focused on harvesting, I decided it was time to put some of those machines to work by taking on a few custom tillage contracts to bring in some extra income.

We started by taking on a massive plowing contract that will pay out over $100,000 once completed. Our New Holland TJ500 has been handling that job, pulling the John Deere 2730 13-shank ripper and working its way through the entire field.

On top of that, we also accepted an even bigger job — a 300 acre cultivating contract. For that task we’re running our Sunflower 6631 vertical tillage discs, which are being pulled by the John Deere 8960 and the New Holland 9884. Both of these cultivating tractors are still running in the background today while we focus on the harvest, and with any luck the TJ500 should be finishing up the ripping contract by the end of the episode, bringing in a nice boost of cash as we near the end of Year 1.
