Nigeria has warned that retaliatory measures against South Africa remain an option as tensions grow over the treatment of Nigerians living in the country.
Speaking in an interview, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, condemned recent attacks on Nigerians and dismissed claims that those affected are undocumented migrants.
She said many of the victims are legitimate business owners whose shops and properties have been looted or destroyed.
Odumegwu-Ojukwu said the Federal Government is deeply disappointed by the situation, citing Nigeria’s historic support for South Africa’s anti-apartheid struggle.
“Nigeria is not happy,” she said, noting that generations of Nigerians made sacrifices in support of South Africa’s liberation and questioning why black African migrants were being specifically targeted.
The minister disclosed that the Federal Government is considering possible retaliatory measures, although she noted that any such decision would require the involvement of the National Assembly.
She also dismissed reports of delays in repatriation efforts, explaining that the process has been slowed only by documentation requirements with South African authorities.
According to her, President Bola Tinubu has directed the establishment of a crisis response unit at Nigeria’s consulate in Johannesburg and mission in Pretoria to coordinate evacuations and provide support for affected citizens in collaboration with NEMA.
The remarks come amid growing diplomatic tensions and renewed concerns over the safety of Nigerians living and doing business in South Africa.
