The Shoebill Drinking Water | Eau potable bec-en-sabot (Balaeniceps Rex)

Описание: The shoebill stork drinking water from it's pond in Entebbe zoo also known as Uganda Wildlife Education Centre near Kampala City.
Shoebills are solitary animals and live in a swamp habitat and are mainly carnivorous with fish, snakes, frogs and other small animals making up the most of their diet or food.

They are known to live for around 36 years when in captivity and 35 years in the wild. They raise chicks which is normally one and their gestation period is 30 days.

They do make a cluttering noise when they see someone especially a stranger and also make some funny noises.

Shoebill beaks can reach up to 24 cm in length and 20 cm in width.
The shoebill stands at an average height of four and half feet. It’s massive beak is strong enough to decapitate a 6 (six) foot fish. Shoebills are compared to dinosaurs by very many people. The shoebill has skinny long legs like most wading birds. It weighs an average of 12.3 pounds or around 5.6 kg and the wingspan is 7.7 feet (2.33m).

Shoebills rarely raise more than one chick and at most lay two (2) eggs.

They live in wetlands as their habitat and their range is widely distributed but mainly found in Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan and Zambia.

In Uganda they are found in Murchison National Park, Mabamba and Makanaga wetlands, etc...

Shoebills are carnivorous and feed on fish, snakes, frogs, monitor lizards, young crocodiles and many more aquatic dwelling animals.

The lifespan of a shoebill is 35 years in the wild and 36 years in captivity.

They have an incubation period of 30 days.

Threats to survival include things like hunting, pet trade and destruction of wetlands.

They have a conservation status which is VULNERABLE according to IUCN
