Let's review each episode of the classic Cartoon Network cartoon Samurai Jack in (mostly)under a minute!
Transcript:
Episode 33 is the first I can unflinchingly call bad. Jack encounters a Totoro-looking creature, who relentlessly follows him. And that's the plot. Needless to say, I HATE this thing! First of all, it's in that design I think has been mathematically proven to be eye candy to young children. A round shape with a wide smile and a pronounced butt. Well done, you've made the Minions before the Minions. Somewhere, a five year old is laughing. Second, it's so ANNOYING! There's a way to make cute or irritating work, but that's not here. The creature just makes repetitive noises or big expressions like a little kid demanding attention, and it gets old and FAST! Which wouldn't be too bad, except it's also constantly proving a hindrance to Jack. At one point, Jack thanks it for all its help, but all we're shown is it just getting in his way and ruining his life. Which it then majorly does by destroying the crystal that could have sent Jack home! I'm sorry, WHY are we not supposed to want Jack to gut this thing?! Even the other aspects feel lacking. This is one of the most awkward frontal walking shots I've ever seen. And Jack's unnecessary dialog is made even more awkward by how overly written it is, like Shyamalan decided to guest write. And keeping with the tone they're trying for, the background music is that saccharine cutesy score you'd hear from Disney Junior that further grates on my nerves. Thankfully, the episode finally gets good when Jack abandons the creature and runs into a gang of robot greasers. We FINALLY get some fun action, and the creature FINALLY proves itself, as when Jack is about finished, it shows it can turn into a ferocious beast, which makes short work of the gang, then turns back. And we get one final scene of annoyance before the episode mercifully ends. I don't know why we got this. Did the kid of one of the producers have a script, and Genndy had to use it or risk cancellation? I don't know, but if you're going to see this, skip to the final fight and watch nothing else. And someone release a clean rip of Wild Ride, already!
