On the shore of Loch Striven, in Ardyne at the southern tip of the Cowal Peninsula, those who know what to look for can find the weather-beaten standing stone known as the 'Creag na Cailleach'. The stone is tied up in the Gaelic legend of the 'Cailleach', a divine hag who brings the chill weather with her as she walks the lands of Argyll in Winter and who turns to stone during the summer months. The stone at Ardyne is one of several locations scattered across Argyll that bear her name and carry links to her legend.
This video looks into the legend of the Cailleach and how the Creag na Cailleach may have played its role in the community at Ardyne centuries ago.
Being a non-Gaelic speaker, I apologise if my pronunciation of 'Cailleach' is not correct! I found several different suggestions on how to say it and went with what seemed best. The site of the stone is shown on maps at the end of the video and is straightforward enough to visit. The stone is on the shore road at Ardyne, on the east shore of Loch Striven, located about 10 metres into the woods and back from the road before the property boundary for the MOD land.
