In a Full-Time 4Wheel Drive vehicle there is a third differential that allows the driver to lock all wheels, but is does not require any input from the driver to engage 4wheel drive. The vehicle is always in 4Wheel drive.

In a Part-Time 4Wheel Drive configuration, there is a transfer case that mechanically locks the front differential with the rear. The rear differential is the normal driving mode that allows for normal everyday driving such as parking and an occasional u-turn. The part-time configuration also requires occasionally engaging the 4wheel drive to keep components lubricated so that the 4wheel drive operates as intended when engaged.

This makes the full-time a better and "carefree" option compared to the part-time 4wheel drive option.
