Hi there. I am John Bond from Riverwinds Consulting and this is Publishing Defined.

Today I am going to discuss Crossmark which is an article update identification service.

The Crossmark system links readers to relevant updated versions, corrections, errata, or in rare cases retractions of scholarly articles. The reader clicks on the Crossmark logo, a colorful bookmark-type logo, and sees a pop up information box. This box alerts the reader if a more update version of the article exists, or perhaps supplemental material has been added, or a host of other changes. The Crossmark logo would be present on a PDF, HTML, or ePub version of an article or content.

The reader benefits by knowing they are reviewing the most current version of an article or having access to additional new information which may be of value.

Libraries benefit by seeing the licenses that apply to the work, as well as having the confidence of knowing how to find the most recent version of an article. They can also see any changes to the ORCID ID information or funding information.

Publishers benefit by being able to link to the current version of an article as well as other relevant changes. FYI, the service is paid for by the publishers.

Crossmark is offered by Crossref, a not-for-profit association. Crossref represents over 4,000 plus publishers and organizations. Crossref, as you know, also provides the valued reference linking service. This service connects citations in articles with the actual full text document or content using the DOI or digital object identifier.

Crossmark has been around since about 2012. Crossmark is offered by 300 plus publishers as of this date and is an invaluable service that needs to be embraced by all publishers and associations.
