Peace with the Taliban: A compromise on human rights?
Kabul and its major international allies have been struggling to strike a peace deal with the Taliban for years. However, very little progress has been made in bringing the group to the negotiating table. After more than 17 years of bloody conflict, President Ashraf Ghani has made a comprehensive peace offer, with no preconditions, which includes recognizing the insurgent group as a political party. For the first time in decades, it seems peace could have a real chance in Afghanistan.
The unprecedented peace proposal has raised concerns among human rights activists, who argue that a hasty negotiation process could jeopardize the achievements made since the Taliban’s defeat in 2001.
Will there be a compromise on human rights and women’s rights in particular, for a possible peace deal with the Taliban?
How would the West justify cooperation with an Afghan government that could include the Taliban?
Would the Taliban’s participation in the Afghan government trigger another influx of Afghan refugees to Germany and other European countries?
Questions like these, which are threatening hopes of finding a peaceful solution to the Afghan war, will be discussed with the panelists.
